What to do After a Hurricane

Hurricane damageYou can spend weeks preparing for a hurricane to strike but the aftermath can be devastating. The storm can leave you confused and without a clear plan of action on what to do to begin recovering. Follow these five tips if a hurricane impacts your community:

  • Do not drive unless it is absolutely necessary.

  • Do not drink or prepare food with tap water until you are certain it’s not contaminated.

  • Look for advice and instructions about emergency medical, food and housing aid and other forms of assistance.  Here are some possible sources: The Houston Chronicle, News Radio 740 KTRH, and click2houston.com.

  • Take photos of any damage, both of building and their contents, for insurance claims.  Make minor repairs to prevent further damage or looting, but do not make major repairs or dispose of damaged property until it has been inspected by an adjuster.  Save all receipts.

  • If your power has gone out, open refrigerators and freezers only when necessary.  A freezer without power can keep food in satisfactory condition up to 36 hours if it is kept closed.  Wrapping a freezer in blankets will help insulate it.

Project: Wood Fence - Repair

Windgusts knocked a portion of our fence down into a neighbor's yard. We needed new posts to be cement-set, and a full 1/3 of our fence to be replaced to be more sturdy. We also wanted our fence to be re-stained and sealed. After our fence was knocked down, we began a fervent search online to find a fencing company that was local, legitimate, and seemed to have a strong ethical commitment to their clients. Several out of state companies rush into areas with wind gusts to repair the fence poorly, and then take off so that their warranty isn't enforceable. As Good As New LLC is a long-standing company in the area, and had a faith-based business ethics system that was attractive to us. They sent an inspector out to give us an estimate, and his knowledge-base on good fencing was very impressive. They didn't try to upsell us whatsoever, and even prevented us from spending money on some 'upgrades' than we were planning on that weren't worth it for our situation. Their team completed the re-fencing, sealing, and staining in less than one day. They were kind enough to re-do a few of our sprinkler heads in the backyard to make the water flow more efficient with the positioning of the new fence. The price was great for a fantastic job, and our fence is by far the best on our street. :)
