7 Tips on How To Choose the Right Fence Contractor

fence contractor A fence is more than just a statement about your personal taste. It can also add to your home’s future resale value. Since it’s a significant investment, homeowners will want to hire the best fence contractor for the job. You can be sure to get the project completed on time and within your budget when you hire the right professionals.

There are several factors to consider, from your budget to the type of fence you want to be installed. In this blog post, we’ll go over the seven top tips on how to choose a fence contractor.

Things To Consider When Hiring a Fence Company

Before going over the tips below, make sure to follow all homeowners association (HOA) regulations. In addition, you should also check with local housing authorities if you need to secure a permit for your fence installation. An experienced contractor can help you get all the necessary documentation and other requirements.

Get Referrals and Recommendations

Asking for references from someone you know is an excellent way to find a good fence installation contractor. It can save you time since your friends and family who gave the referral have done the screening for you. In addition, you can ask about their experience working with the contractor and determine if the service is a good fit for you.

Research Different Contractors

Our second tip on how to choose a fence contractor is to research different companies. You can look for other local firms online and check out the information they provide on their websites. When you get referrals from friends and family, it is best to give it your due diligence and learn more about the company. Look for their contact information, work samples, free tips and information and customer testimonials. You can learn a lot about a company by the quality of its website’s content.

Fair Pricing and Your Budget

The project’s cost can be one of the crucial factors for some homeowners. For this reason, it is best to obtain at least three quotations and estimates from various contractors. Doing so allows you to get a reasonable ballpark estimate of the current industry prices. In addition, you can be sure you’re not paying too much for materials and labor, and you’re staying within your budget.

In case there are additional costs, contractors should be able to explain them to you. For example, certain obstacles along your yard’s perimeter can complicate fence construction, such as trees, brushes, and areas with substantial elevation. Working around these obstacles can be much more labor-intensive, thus raising the total cost. The best fencing contractors can point these out to you, explain them in detail and maybe provide better alternatives.

Make sure to ask about discounts and special offers. For example, some contractors provide reduced rates for new clients, which is an excellent way for you to save some money. Some firms post these offers on their website or through their newsletters.

Finally, look for more value for your money and don’t make your choice based on the price. For instance, if a contractor offers to provide you with better quality wood for a small extra cost, that can be a better deal.

Reliability and Industry Experience

Find out how long the company has been in the industry. The best contractors have years of work experience you can rely on. As a result, you can expect them to be more reliable, courteous, professional and timely. In addition, because of their relative experience, they may have built a network of suppliers and other industry peers, allowing them to provide you with a better estimate.

Industry-Level Safety Compliance

Another important tip on how to choose a fence contractor is to check if the firm has a high level of safety compliance in the workplace. Make sure they provide adequate insurance, enacting all essential health and safety protocols.

When fencing contractors comply with today’s safety standards, it ensures you’re compensated for any property damage, if any should occur. Hiring a firm with bonded contractors also protects you if their on-site crew fails to complete the job properly or if they fail to pay for necessary permits.

Training and Qualifications

Choose a firm that employs duly qualified professionals who have acquired adequate training. You don’t want to waste money on poor craftsmanship, and it gives you peace of mind knowing that the contractors working on your project follow industry best practices.

Guarantee and Quality Workmanship

It is best to choose a fencing contractor who guarantees their work, ensuring quality workmanship. Other than that, look for case studies posted on the firm’s website. Examine the technical specifications of the project they highlight. For example, determine how large the area they were working on, what materials were used and how fast they completed the task. Analyzing the details allows you to understand their process better, and the photos they include give you an idea of the quality of their work.

Red Flags to Watch Out For When Hiring a Contractor

Aside from the seven factors mentioned above, you should watch out for the following red flags as you evaluate each contractor:

  • Lowest Price: When contractors offer significantly low prices, they may be applying shortcuts in their work, or they could be using cheaper materials. While it may save you money upfront, you lose a lot over time because of poor quality.
  • Pushy Representatives: Company representatives who push you to hire them on the spot can be a bad sign. The best fencing contractors allow customers time to decide which company to hire.
  • Only Cash Payments Allowed: Reliable contractors should allow customers to use various payment options. You should also watch out for firms that demand full payment upfront.
  • No Written Quotes: Avoid fence contractors that only give you a quote over the phone. Written quotes and proposals allow you to determine the actual contract price for the project. It also prevents contractors from adding extra charges.

Project: Wood Fence - Repair

Windgusts knocked a portion of our fence down into a neighbor's yard. We needed new posts to be cement-set, and a full 1/3 of our fence to be replaced to be more sturdy. We also wanted our fence to be re-stained and sealed. After our fence was knocked down, we began a fervent search online to find a fencing company that was local, legitimate, and seemed to have a strong ethical commitment to their clients. Several out of state companies rush into areas with wind gusts to repair the fence poorly, and then take off so that their warranty isn't enforceable. As Good As New LLC is a long-standing company in the area, and had a faith-based business ethics system that was attractive to us. They sent an inspector out to give us an estimate, and his knowledge-base on good fencing was very impressive. They didn't try to upsell us whatsoever, and even prevented us from spending money on some 'upgrades' than we were planning on that weren't worth it for our situation. Their team completed the re-fencing, sealing, and staining in less than one day. They were kind enough to re-do a few of our sprinkler heads in the backyard to make the water flow more efficient with the positioning of the new fence. The price was great for a fantastic job, and our fence is by far the best on our street. :)
